Scania Batteries Power the Next Generation of Electric Mining Vehicles

Strategic partnership with MacLean Engineering strengthens underground mining with safer and more efficient battery electric equipment

Collingwood, Ontario, Canada, 29 July 2026 – MacLean Engineering has selected Scania Industrial Batteries as the primary battery supplier for its growing fleet of battery electric underground mining vehicles. The partnership is expected to strengthen the company’s efforts to develop safer, more reliable, and environmentally responsible mining equipment while supporting the industry’s shift toward cleaner operations.

The collaboration will see Scania’s Core 800 battery packs integrated into MacLean’s underground mining equipment. These advanced battery systems were chosen after a detailed evaluation that assessed battery performance, safety, reliability, regulatory compliance, and long-term technical support. The decision reflects the growing importance of dependable battery technology in demanding underground mining environments.

Battery electric mining equipment is becoming increasingly popular as mining companies look for ways to reduce fuel costs, lower emissions, and improve working conditions. Unlike diesel-powered machinery, electric vehicles produce no exhaust emissions during operation, helping mines reduce ventilation requirements while creating a cleaner and healthier workplace for employees.

Safety was another major factor behind the partnership. The selected battery systems are designed with advanced thermal management and battery management technology that improves operational reliability and supports safer maintenance practices. These features help reduce risks while ensuring equipment performs efficiently in challenging underground conditions.

The partnership also supports MacLean Engineering’s long-term sustainability goals, including its Real Zero 2040 commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through greater use of battery electric technologies. As more mining companies invest in electrification, advanced battery systems are expected to play a key role in improving productivity while supporting environmental objectives.

Industry experts believe collaborations between equipment manufacturers and battery technology providers will accelerate the adoption of electric mining vehicles across the global mining sector. As battery technology continues to evolve, mining operations are expected to benefit from improved energy efficiency, lower operating costs, and safer working environments, helping drive the future of sustainable mining.
